Selling a used car yourself, has some advantages:

• You separate the whole process into two smaller steps. Sell your car, then buy another car. This means you can focus on doing one step at a time.
• You can have cash on hand, from selling your old car. This will help you negotiate a cheaper new car price, or better loan terms with more down.
• You can sell your car at a higher price verses a trade-in price.

Selling the used car yourself, has some disadvantages:

• You could be left without a vehicle after you sell your car, and before you buy your next car.
• You have to wait for a car buyer for your used car.
• You have to deal with not focused used car buyers, meaning people who are interested in ripping you off, not paying a fair price.
